GLOBAL PERSPECTIVESA Journey of Identity through Hip Hop |
THE NEXT CD-ROM
The Next CDROM is a multimedia resource combining music and video to take Educators, Youth Workers and learners on a journey to the heart of Hip Hop culture locally and globally.
Theme A: Colonisation/Indigenous Issues
The aim of this resource is to ‘unpack’ some of the most universal themes that arise from any study of Hip Hop culture. And at the front line of this investigation is a look at Colonisation and its effects on indigenous peoples. The Resource takes a close look at the context within Aotearoa New Zealand and the effect on the indigenous M•ori people. As a result of colonisation, indigenous people worldwide continue to suffer economically, politically, socially, spiritually and culturally.
Theme B: Role Models
These new directions – new ‘role models’ – form the core of the second theme. We will examine the claims that often arise from mainstream media and commentators about the sexist and violent attitudes expressed through Hip Hop, to discover whether they ring true in Aotearoa. We’ll also explore the positive ‘role models’ that can be gained from entering the Hip Hop world, where words, music, dance and graff art become the weapons of choice.
Theme C: Commercialisation
The third theme considers how money – the seeking of it, lack of it, control of it and influence of it – affects the Hip Hop community and all the groups who feed into it. With the worldwide explosion in the popularity of Hip Hop, Commercialisation (where the focus shifts from ‘message’ to ‘money’) has the power to rocket people from poverty to super-star status overnight.
Theme D: Politicisation
The last of our themes looks at the politics of Hip Hop. Whether through lyrics or social commentary expressed through graffiti, Hip Hop has always been a powerful way of voicing strongly held beliefs and new ideas. That Hip Hop arose from the anger and frustrations of the street is evident in its words, practice and art. It helps to give the system a shake up, and has the power to unite like-minded groups all around the world.
GLOBAL PERSPECTIVES
The Global Perspectives Activity CD provides five self-directed and group activities that engage participants in a more detailed and personal exploration of the global perspectives that can be discovered within a study of the Hip Hop genre.
Finding a Voice Webquest Self-directed
A quest to explore and define the unique voices of indigenous Hip Hop. This self-directed webquest activity takes the participant on a three stage journey to:
1. Explore the unique indigenous identities voiced through Hip Hop.
2. Assemble a ‘recipe’ for expressing unique identity.
3. Discover each participant’s unique identity and give voice to it through the elements of Hip Hop.
Word of Mouth: Poetry & Rap Self-directed
This self-directed activity introduces participants to four strong political messages – two voiced as poetry and two as rap.
It encourages an exploration of the messages, and compares and contrasts the two genres – leading to the creation of a new and unique piece of rap or poetry. It also introduces basic poetic terms, and includes links to extend the activity further.
Global Soundscapes Group
A Hip Hop Music Activity ~ With the aid of music samples, this fun group activity asks participants to identify the unique voices of Hip Hop from around the world.
It introduces participants to individual artists, the elements that make each sample unique to its country of origin, and offers the opportunity to learn more about each artist and the issues that concern them.
Building the Dream: The Commercial Face of Hip Hop Self-directed
This self-directed activity looks behind the scenes at the commercial world of Hip Hop, exploring the source and intentions behind the most visible of Hip Hop messages, and challenging participants to create their own successful Hip Hop artist profile.
